India: Jaipur Literature Festival

From January 21-25, the 2008 DSC Jaipur Literature Festival brought together world-class writers and artists from across continents, cultures, forms, and genres such as Ian McEwan, Christopher Hampton, Donna Tartt, Dev Anand, Aparna Sen, Manil Suri, Indra Sinha, Uday Prakash, Nayantara Saghal, Kunal Basu, Namita Devidayal, young poets Jeet Thayil, Tishani Doshi, Sampurna Chattarji, Sarnath Banerjee, Robin Robertson, Ambarish Satwik, Sonia Faleiro, Moni Mohsin, Kamila Shamsie and Shahbano Bilgrami.
There were more than a hundred authors at the festival from both the east and west. The 5-day free festival had over 2,500 people in attendance. Evening performances included artists Anoushka Shankar, Karsh Kale, Paban Das Baul and many more. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan also made an appearance. Evening events included a special screening of Hollywood blockbuster, Atonement, screened with a special Q&A with author Ian McEwan and the film’s screenwriter, Christopher Hampton.
