Be UNIQUE. Be ANOKHI.

Remembering Alexander McQueen

As I am toiling away at the computer my mobile rings. I'm immediately notified at the sudden demise of "General Lee" designer, (Lee) Alexander McQueen who at the age of 40 was found dead in his London home this morning.

As I barely am processing this, and trying to write this entry, my phone is ringing off the hook. Fellow fashion friends who are in New York for the Ready -To-Wear Collections are reeling. His collection was to be shown today. The Tent at Bryant Park has been silenced as is the rest of the fashion world.

Text messages, Facebook messages. Twitter.

I have followed his career and have always been awestruck by the creativity of this man, who grew up from humble beginnings as the son of a taxi driver. This man, who honed his skills on Saville Row (where he apprenticed) to eventually taking the reigns over the Givenchy House in 1996, making his foray from the fashion bubble to mainstream. Fashion forever changed.

He was fearless and breathlessly pushed the boundaries of couture often leaving those with the golden tickets at his shows initially ruffled but then later relished on what they had witnessed.

Right now. I am stunned. As just on Friday I wore one of his dresses to the ANOKHI gala.

Feel free to share your sentiments with me at hina.ansari@anokhimagazine.com.

Best,
