Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts Gala & Exhibit

Toronto’s famed Art Gallery of Ontario welcomed this beautiful exhibit in November with a fantastic launch gala. The Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts exhibit was organized in collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, U.K., and the stop in Toronto was the only Canadian stop on its tour. The exhibit spotlights over 200 stunning pieces, including paintings, tapestries, weapons, thrones and jewels designed for royalty in India from the beginning of the 18th century to 1947, the end of British rule in India.

At the gala itself, over 450 guests enjoyed the evening with an exclusive peak at the exhibit, as well as a live performance from Autorickshaw, a dhol musical piece and a kathak dance number. Opening remarks were made by the Art Gallery of Ontario’s CEO and Director, Matthew Teitelbaum and co-chairs Laura Rapp and film director Deepa Mehta, before an Indian-infused dinner was served. The night came to end with a silent auction, a scotch tasting (courtesy of Johnnie Walker), a Bollywood-inspired dance performance and a live DJ, who had guests dancing the night away. Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts will be on display at the Art Gallery Of Ontario until April 3, 2011.
