Sexy & Successful: Salim & Sulaiman Merchant
Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are one of the best pairs to have happened to Bollywood. The music they breathe is as much a part of their DNA as the bond they share as brothers. Salim and Sulaiman began their music careers after being inspired by their father Sadruddin Merchant, who used to lead the Ismali Scouts Orchestra in India. But it wasn’t until 2003 (six years after their first music composition in a Bollywood film) that they gained popularity as music directors.
Having produced numerous award-winning soundtracks, the brothers are amongst the hottest music directors in the market right now. Their arresting vocals and perfect percussions have captured the hearts of people in every corner of the world. True innovators in their art, Salim and Sulaiman continue to surprise audiences with their productions — soulful masterpieces that infuse contemporary chords with the deep resonance of classical music. Mixing western, folk, Hindustani and Sufi infl uences, they’ve produced countless chart-toppers from movies such as Pyaar Impossible, Rocket Singh, Luck, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Fashion, Chak De India, Dor, Iqbal and Kites. Away from Bollywood, Salim and Sulaiman have collaborated with Lady Gaga and released the offi cial Bollywood remixes of “Born This Way” and “Judas” to critical acclaim, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem “Africa, You’re a Star” with Loyiso Bala. Presently, Salim sits on the judging panel of The X Factor India alongside Sonu Nigam and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
FilmFare, Zee Cine, Screen and IIFA Awards are not new to this dynamic duo. With a couple of awards in their bag and several more to come, Salim and Sulaiman are busy at work redefi ning India’s music and fi lm industries with several Bollywood productions set for release this year.
