Are You An Effective Communicator?

History dictates that the value of life is in part determined by effective communication and thus, is the most powerful tool known to humankind. It’s not whether our communication is good or bad that penetrates or resonates, but the ability of the communicator to be effective. Point in case, Hitler and Osama Bin Laden were or are no less effective communicators then Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa.
In today’s society, the diversification of communication channels available to us are a testament to our need to communicate and be communicated with – TV, radio, books, magazines, newspapers, websites, search engines, social media, non verbal communication and of course, the spoken word. Communication helps us to gain knowledge through sharing what we have experienced, what we have learned and what we believe in. It’s the input/output of this process that helps us communicate with ourselves and the world around us.
That said, do you believe that you are an effective communicator? Here’s what international life coach, Anthony Robbins has to say: “To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.”
Personally, I believe Anthony has hit the nail on the head. Being good at communicating means that you have to be cognisant of not only what you are communicating, but to whom. But more than this, to effectively communicate, we have to have an audience of listeners. That’s when you know that you’re communication is truly effective. Effective communication = audience. Audience = value. Value = power. Whether your audience is self, family, friends, workmates, business associates or a mass following, oftentimes, success is determined by the ‘by-in’ factor which in itself, is reflective of how effective we are as communicators.
