Noise
Reduction
Some
people call it spring cleaning; I call it noise reduction. Why?
Because cleaning house for me means more than steaming my
carpets or a drop-off to the local Salvation Army. It means filtering out all of the unwanted residue
that has been cluttering up my personal, professional, as well
as physical space over the preceding months. I must admit though
that it’s much easier to remove unwanted clothing than it is
the dusty cobwebs life leaves behind in the most unexpected and
hard-to-reach places. You know the places I mean - the ones that
require us to solicit help to placate.
Asking
for help is something our periphery oftentimes tells us is a
sign of weakness, but our inner voice says otherwise, reminding
us that it is a mark of great strength because none of us were
born with all the answers. When the noise becomes so loud that
we cannot hear the silence anymore, it’s time to turn to the
sages, our friends and family, to help us regain balance and
dissipate the vertigo. I guess there’s something to be said
for the phrase, ‘silence is golden’.
And
no one knows this better than Devyani Saltzman, writer and only
child of acclaimed film director Deepa Mehta. Featured in this
issue’s Open Chest
interview on page 86, Saltzman chats with great candour about
the effects of her parents’ divorce on her when she was only
eleven, the infamous estrangement that is said to have resulted
thereafter between mother and daughter, finding her identity as
a woman of bi-cultural heritage, and creating her own space as
an internationally published writer. If there’s one thing I
took away from the interview, it is that this is an accomplished
young woman who understands the importance of noise reduction!

Next Time,
